I had an extremely odd feeling of Deja Vous this week.

I was sure that I had unsubscribed from a blog using FeedBurner’s email subscription service a week ago. In fact I always keep the last email I unsubscribe to by habit in case there is a problem.

Yet this morning I received another email update from FeedBurner email which was odd. Again I didn’t leave anything to chance so I clicked on the “unsubscribe” link and was presented with a message to say “FeedBurner could not find your subscription”.

FeedBurner Email Issues

I performed an advanced search on the official FeedBurner forum but didn’t find too many people with the same problem. However like any service there is the chance of occasional glitches in the system. I was just surprised that FeedBurner had unsubscribe problems as I use to use the email subscription on this very blog with no apparent problems. The reason I changed to Aweber was so that I could get feedback on what posts people had read before they subscribed. Subscription reports show the post URL a new subscriber visited before signing up for updates.

Aweber Subscriptions

At lest using Aweber I can communicate with my readers and not force them to double op-in. As you may already be aware about one third of people never confirm their email addresses. This could be due to several factors:

People do not feel they have to confirm gain - People new to email may object to completing the confirmation link and will ignore the message.

Tedium - How many times do you get confirmation email requests? This can be off putting for many people so they will ignore and delete the confirmation email.

Using an established autoresponder service such as Aweber you have trusted service that strictly adherer’s to email policies so people can trust that your email message will have an auto generated unsubscribe link in EVERY email message that is controlled by the Aweber system.

Unlike self hosted email software where it depends on your web host’s server to ensure the script runs smoothly.

Solution

I have forwarded the email to FeedBurner so they have evidence of the problem and they can look into the matter to resolve the issue. I’m sure I’m not the only person experiencing this problem.

Maybe it is a good thing I no longer use their email updates service as I have an Aweber account I prefer to use this for all my email based subscription management needs.

I will continue to use FeedBurners RSS subscription service indefinitely. I don’t have any issues with their service.

Have you experienced any issues with your third party email subscription service on your blog?

If so how did you resolve it?
