My Experiences With Facebook
Finding Friends
Adding more contact to your Facebook profile can be a cumbersome but a necessary evil if you want to grow your friends list.
Look for people with similar interests to your niche. A good place to start is the Facebook Groups where people have chosen to associate themselves with topics of interest to them. So your work is half done for you. Search through the members and their contacts and invite them to become friends.
Adding Too Many Friends
Adding friends on Facebook is a quick and easy process but you do have to limit the number of friend added in any day. There is no clear cut limit but no more than 50 daily should keep you from being in breach of their terms. The only way signs that define adding too many friends is when a pop up message appears advising you to slow down!
I believe a total of 3 warning signs will get you a friendly email message to alert you that you may lose your account so be careful and do not go overboard in the process of adding friends to your Facebook profile.
Etiquette
Don’t just click on the “Add Friends”, draft up a meaningful message and include their first name. This part could mean the difference between someone confirming you or declining your friend request altogether. It doesn’t take long to prepare. Besides it’s common courtesy to send a brief message with your friend request. People will be more receptive to you as a result.
Cardinal Mistakes
Be careful what you comment on because everything you do on Facebook appears on the front page of your “Wall” along with every comment you make on other people’s profiles and photos. Don’t do what I did a few weeks ago, and place random comments on a good looking guys photo. Just a brief “nice Photo” in my response but it was a surprise to see my comment perched at the top of my Wall [lessons learned]. Just keep to the topic and get on with the task at hand. Don’t get distracted by non productive things. LOL
Don’t Do This!
1. Post “chain letters” type messages on your friends Slide FunSpace, Super Wall, The Wall or your Inbox. It seems that the people have no idea how annoying these useless rants can be. At least with the Slide FunSpace you have the option to “block” persistent offenders or just “remove” them from your contacts altogether.
2. Use the chat to send inappropriate message to people like sexual innuendo [yes it really happens] or anything that could cause offense.
3. Post multiple Notes, Posters, Videos on your friends Wall all in one day. This is viewed as Spam an this definitely “overkill”.
4. Post religious, political themed content on masses as it is obvious that many people will either have no interest or be offended. Do so at your own risk!
Best to be safe than sorry. Just keep it professional and fun.
5. Offer web design services and direct people to your website that contains several dead links. Worse still when someone points the error out to you don’t correct them and pretend that it never happened. The same applies to any other business service. Yes this did happen via Facebook chat.
Sheesh!
You’ve just lost ALL trust and credibility!
6. Place affiliate links on Wall’s, Fan Pages and other areas as a means to pollute the Facebook area. Give some value by providing your thoughts and expertise. A good tip is to provide relevant links to helpful tools and resources of benefit to others.
Quick Tips
If you want to provide offers to your friends, for goodness sakes, ask them to join your mailing list and explain to them what benefits they will receive for becoming a subscriber. All too often Internet Marketers blast out the latest product launch product inappropriately and abuse the Social networks and their friends lists.
Their email system does take some getting use to and I hope they sort out their Ajax scripting as I came across many error messages when trying to send out an Event announcement. I have no idea if my messages were sent out or worse still if duplicate messages were made.
I would highly recommend inviting people to join your mailing list so you can better manage contacting large numbers of people. Aweber being my first and only choice for professional and reliable email management service.
I would like to hear your experiences with Facebook and don’t forget to add me to your circle of friends too!
